LOWER FLORIDA KEYS FLATS FISHING REPORT
Friday, January 28 2011

Lee ward flat: Great spot to fish for barracuda out of a NE wind.

Another pretty day in the Florida Keys..

We had a minor cold front come though several days ago.   Which dropped our temperatures into the 60's..   Back in the mid 70's in a couple of days..

You know what that means...

Richard with his first Key West permit

Warmer water on the flats will put , tarpon, permit and bonefish back in the picture..  I have been finding all three on the warmer days in between cold fronts...

                                                            Black Tip Shark

Of course we still have our winter cold water species to fish for too..  Sharks , barracudas, jacks, sea trout and lady fish are all fun..

Looks great for next week!!

Want to go fishing???

I am open...  Lets go!

                                                                  Bahia Honda State Park

Pretty day in the Florida Keys..  We had a minor cold front come though yesterday..  The day a front hits is typically cloudy and windy.. the follow days are blue bird skies and cooler..  Today's high 65 degrees..  Tomorrows high 75 degrees....  YAY!!

                                                                    Laid Up Tarpon

Last week it was warm enough to find 5 to 6 foot resident tarpon laid up in some of the warm up flats and basins..    Friday was epic it was more like April then January ...  We found a bunch of big tarpon, permit, tanker barracuda and big black tips all in the same edge...  Water temperatures were 80 degrees..  Jim from Ohio got one big tarpon to eat a live crab..   The next day the front hit...

                                                                     Remora

Strange catch of the month award goes to Al from North Dakota..  Al hooked up with this remora while casting at an 8 foot sawfish...   The sawfish would have certainly won the strang catch of the year award.

Al and Chris doubled up on black tip sharks....

Back to sharks, cudas, redfish, ladyfish, etc.. for a the next day or so.. then it should be warm enough for tarpon, permit and bonefish... at least until the next front arrrives...

Cold fronts do give me a chance to up date reports, work on the boat , tye flies, etc..  I have added a new page to the web site.. Check out the new BLOG.  I will try to keep it current with tips, rants, cool pics  and other ramblings from he Lower Florida Keys.

While a lot of the country is shoveling, plowing and shivering..  Here in the Florida Keys, we are just coming  of our last cold front...  Our typical winter scenario is some very nice days, cold front... some really nice days.. cold front..  you get the picture...

Lisa and Linda with lady fish...    Can't have too many ladies on board....

On the cooler days we can still go fishing..  Linda and Lisa had a blast catching lady fish and sight fishing black tip sharks...  Even got some shots at 4 foot cudas laying in some shallow warm up flats..  Unfortunately it was the last day of thier vacation... back to a foot of snow in Michigan the next day..

High temperature near 80 for most of this week...  That will heat up the water and make for some great winter time flats fishing...  Permit, bonefish and tarpon will be on the agenda..  Hard to pick which one...

Photo courtesy of Capt. Gabe Nyblad

Gabe texted me this pic from his skiff last week...  I don't normally post other Captains catches on my report, but I thought this photo was too good not to share..   Gabe guides here in the Florida Keys till the end of tarpon season..  Then off to Alaska were he guides for the  Good News River Lodge.  After several months of epic salmon fishing in Alaska he returns to Michigan to chase steelhead..   What a life!

                                                    "Chamber Of Commerce Day"

Today was absolutely gorgeous..  The nicest day we have had this year..  Highs near 80, virtually no wind and I had a dentist appointment..  Desperately wished some one would have booked me for today, so I had an excuse to reschedule..  My friends that went reported lots of tarpon and permit in the back country..

Permit and tarpon fishing has been good on these warmer days..  Looks like we are in for another minor cold front..  Highs near 70 for most of this week..

                                                      Sharks will eat flys too!!
