Permit Flat

The weather and the fishing continue to be outstanding,,  especially for February..  If you are here in the keys now, you have hit it right,,  Temperatures are near 80 degrees..  This make the fish and me very happy!

Sherry Teauge with her first permit of the year!!

Permit fishing has been very good and will continue to improve..

My friend Jack Teauge with Finatic Charters sent me this pic..  Sherry got her first permit of the season several days ago..  Congratulations Sherry!

Still a lot of cudas on the flats!

Speaking of Jack ...Here is a cuda Jack caught when we were fishing together a couple days ago..  These are fun!!!

Bonefish to the boat!!

?Warmer temperatures have also made for some good bonefishing..

Rolling tarpon!!

Even better.. the warmer temperatures have made for some great early season tarpon fishing... The boats live baiting in the channels have been doing well on tarpon..

It has been warm enough to sight fish tarpon in the basins and flats.. Been finding some 6 foot tarpon in the warmer places!!

For the last week the fishing has been exceptional!

 Especially for February!!

It is hard to decide what to target..   It  has been great for permit, bonefish and big tarpon

Tom with his first bonefish!!!!

Today we had a hard time decide what to go for,, It was Tom's first time ever flats fishing and told me to do what ever I thought would be best.. We started with bonefish and it was so good, we never left the first flat..  Tom hooked 8 bonefish on a half day!!     Talk about hitting one out of the park!!

Tom and Joan with a nice Key West permit

Fished with my friend Ben  from Craig Mt. yesterday in Key West..  The permit fishing was as good as I have ever seen it for about 4 hours on the falling tide..   It was so good I got on the phone and told my friends Tom and Joan  to join us on the same flat.   Joan got this dandy permit on a live crab.  The day before I had got a permit on a merkin and we were determined to do it again..    maybe we should have tried crabs??

(Last year Joan did catch a permit on fly that would have been a new I.G.F.A record in the women's category.  She opted not to kill the fish, just to put her name in the book.)

Ben and I finished up the day hunting big tarpon..  We found some in a warm up basin.. I did get one six footer to follow my toad fly,,  but no go..

Captain Derren Doop with a permit!!

There was a cuda tournament in Key West last Friday and Saturday..  Typically it can be cold this time of year,  Tarpon, permit and bonefish are not always an option  in colder temperatures.   Barracudas can be found in colder water and are a blast!  My friends Capt, Derrin Doop and Capt. Bo Sellers were fishing the tournament, but they were seeing so many permit they quit fishing for barracuda.  Friday they caught 2 permit and Saturday three permit..

Beth's first shark!!

Beth and Jimmy from Minnesota fished with me last week just as it was starting to warm up...  spent most of the day shark fishing.  We did take a look for big tarpon in one basin.. Got a shot at a big one..The day started out great then we covered up with solid cloud cover making it diificult to spot fish..

Tonight a mild cold front will hit the Keys..  But its effects will only be temporary..  high for Wednesday 68 degrees , then back in the mid 70's..

Blizzard spreads snowy shroud over nearly half US

CHICAGO - A fearsome storm spread a smothering shroud of white over nearly half the nation Wednesday, snarling transportation from Oklahoma to New England, burying parts of the Midwest under 2 feet of snow and laying down dangerously heavy ice in the Northeast that was too much for some buildings to bear.

Mean while in the Florida Keys....

Chris and Beth enjoying the ride..

Weather here in the keys was been outstanding..   Especially for this time of year..  Water temperatures are in the high 70's ..  This makes for some great flats fishing..  Been finding 6 foot tarpon in some of the warm up basins and channel edges.. Permit and bonefish can also be found on the warmer flats..

Bonefish on Fly!

My friend capt. Bo Sellers with Shallow Minded Charters sent me this pic today..  I thought it was too good not to post... His buddy Scott Owens took this photo..    Bo was fishing with some friends from Georgia earlier this week and they boated this nice bonefish.

Permit Release

Weather looks great for the next bunch of days!!

Lets go fishing!
