LOWER FLORIDA KEYS FLATS FISHING REPORT
Saturday, May 01 2010

                                   Alberto's First Tarpon!!

I recently had the pleasure of fishing with some great guys that came all the way from Italy to put some tarpon in the air..  We had several tough weather days and some OK weather days..  We had fun.... Simone and his friends  fed, jumped and boated some dandy tarpon..

Simone owns and operates Fish Age

Check  out http://www.fishage.com/ for some very cool gear....hats, dry bags, sun gloves, jackets etc...

Oh, we boated some nice barracuda too!!

The cuda's were pouncing on the tube lure last week!!!  I love barracuda fishing...  The way they chase down the tube, the violent strikes, the jumps, and the way they can make all the line on your reel disappear...

Spring break has sprung!  Had the pleasure of doing several father and son trips this week..

                                                     Father, son and cuda....

                                       John is All Smiles!!!!

John got a bunch of nice sharks ......

We all had a good time... But the sharks and barracudas took a beating...   Kids love shark fishing..  What is not to like?  Throwing bait to big fish in shallow water... Blistering runs and lots of action..

Remember................  Take a kid fishing...

I still remember the times that my dad, grand father and uncles took me...

                                        Katie's First Barracuda!!

Typically the expression is "March arrives like a lion and leaves like a lamb"  or vice versa...  this year it has arrived like a seal, or maybe a penguin..    We have been having some cooler days mixed with warmer days..  On the warmer days there have been LOTS of permit on the flats and channel edges..  Also tarpon in the lay up /warm up spots and some nice schools of bonefish on the warmer flats near deep channels..

On the cooler days we have been having a blast with barracudas!!

Temperatures will be in the mid to high 70's this week end..  YAHOO!!!

                                                  Steve with his first cuda!

Weather has finaly turned warm here in the Keys..  Water temperatures are on the rise and the barracuda fishing is HOT!!  Cudas do not have the glamor reputation of tarpon, permit and bonefish...  But what they do have is blinding speed and the ability to make lots of line vanish of a reel fast.  I love cuda fishing....  The follows, the eats, the runs, the jumps,,,  it is FUN!!

Florida Keys Flats Fishing Report: Nov. 14th....

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Our first major cold front of the year has arrived. Just after that we had some horrendous fishing conditions when Ida was passing though... 30+ mph winds and solid cloud cover. My friend Luke Andrews, a Montana Fly Fishing Outfitter was also passing though as well. So we went even though conditions were awful. It worked out, we fished leeward shore lines and had a blast. We got into baby tarpon, snook and redfish. Luke even tempted a blacktip shark to eat a crab fly..

Thankfully the winds and clouds associated with Tropical Storm Ida have past... I fished with my Friend Capt. Derrrin Doop today.. Blue skies, light winds out of the NE... water temps in the mid to low 70's.. We found a bunch of redfish in the first spot and a surprising amount of bonefish later in the day.. Also lots of BIG barracuda in the 4 to 5 foot size..

Fly fishing for sharks can be an option when things get tough

Florida Keys Flats Fishing Report: Oct. 30th....

The weather continues to be warm and pleasant. Water temperatures are in the low 80's. I have not looked for tarpon in week, but fishing has been very good for permit, bonefish and redfish. How ever the big cuda know it is winter time and have started to appear on the flats in decent numbers.. We had a blast cuda fishing today. Cudas can hit a top speed of 35mph,, that is FAST.. They also can make some amazing jumps..

Florida Keys Flats Fishing Report: Nov. 24th

Mark with a nice redfish...his first fish caught sight fishing..

Cooler weather has lowered the water temperatures on the flats. The last couple of days we have found some bonefish, permit and even some tarpon. I have mainly been targeting redfish. Redfish are more tolerant of cooler water temperatures and will pounce on a live shrimp or a well placed fly.

Large barracudas are also moving on to the flats.. We got several nice ones on tube lures a couple of days ago..

Weather is looking good for tommorrow and later this week!

Sight fishing for barracuda on the flats.
