LOWER FLORIDA KEYS FLATS FISHING REPORT
Tuesday, November 27 2018

Early morning is a good time to look for tarpon

The weather and the fishing has been good here in the Lower Florida Keys.  We do have a minor cold front on the 27th, but temperatures will be back in the 80's this weekend.

Here are a few photos from last week.

This is the time of year, when the big barracudas start to move onto the flats here in the Florida Keys..  Barracudas are a blast to sight fish!  They can hit 30mph and make some spectacular jumps..

Got to fish Saturday morning with my buddy Bo...   It was hot... Permit were everywhere but the slick, calm conditions made it tough. The tarpon were eager to play though.

Fall is my favorite time of year for baby tarpon, bonefish and permit!

Fall is my favorite time of year to flats fish in the Florida Keys!

Fall is "Off Season" No snow birds, very few tourists, vacationing families from the main land are back to school, etc..  Most destination anglers are hunting, elk, birds, etc.. Very few boats on the flats..  Some days we don't see any..  Which means less pressure on the fish.  The road, resteraunts and bars are quieter.   Might even get a discount on lodging too..

It has been a while since I updated my fishing report..  Here are some pics from yesterday.. Took Polly and Jimmy from Southern Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine fishing yesterday.    We had big fun fly fishing for small tarpon..  Found tarpon crashing bait first thing in the morning..   It was cloudy all day, which makes for difficult sight fishing,,  But tarpon roll better on cloudy days.  This time of year the water is warm and the tarpon will roll though out the day.

Here are a few more pics from yesterday..

Polly hooked up to a tarpon at sunrise.

We caught all the tarpon on Gurglers.  Surface fly that imitates a shrimp swimming just under the surface.  Tarpon also love surface plugs..  I prefer to use plugs with single hooks instead of treble hooks..  They are easier on the tarpon and will not foul with grass as much..

Fall is the best time of year here in the Lower Florida Keys for bonefish.  On the right tides and the right days, we can find bonefish, tailing and waking..

Lets go fishing!

It is that time of year we all wait for....  Tarpon season!   The migration is in full swing and schools of tarpon are migrating though the Lower Florida Keys.....  This will continue into early July...

School of Tarpon migrating though the Florida Keys

There have been lots of tarpon cruising the ocean side flats on the right tides.. Some of the schools are very big.  Tarpon are in the back country basins, channels and channel edges also.  The ones in the back will feed better, but we will get lots more shots ocean side..

                                                  Fly fishing for baby tarpon

Juvenile tarpon are here year round and are lots of fun..  Early mornings on the right days we can find them rolling in top...  They will eat a surface fly or top water plug...  Fun Stuff..

                                      Big Pine Key Bonefish

Bonefish are a fun option too!

Most of the permit have been off shore spawning, but will return to flats around the end of May.

I still have some days available in May...  Memorial day weekend just opened up...  Also have days available in June..

Lets go fishing!

Happy New Year!

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later,,,  We got our first real cold front of the season...  Temperatures down in the 60's.  But will warm back into the 70's in a few days..

Father and son barracuda fishing west of key west

Lower water temperatures bring large barracudas up on the flats to warm up. Barracuda fishing is a blast!   We pole across the shallow water flats, spot the barracuda, cast beyond them and then reel the lure by them at a high rate of speed...  When they start to follow reel FASTER!!  Make it look like the lure is getting away..  You can't reel faster then they can swim...  Takes are violent, they jump and can run a couple hundred feet in seconds..

                                                      big pine key shark fishing

The same flats we fish for barracuda also have lots of sharks from 2 foot to 8 foot long...  Sharks are a fun option on cooler days too..

fly fishing for baby tarpon in Cudjoe Key

When the water warms back up in between cold fronts, we can target, baby tarpon, permit and bonefish....

Fishing isn't the only reason to visit the Florida Keys.

September 9th Hurricane Irma made landfall on the Florida Keys...  Here is an excerpt from the Florida Keys Tourism website.

www.flakeys.com

FLORIDA KEYS -- The Florida Keys reopened to visitors Sunday, Oct. 1, following recovery efforts after Hurricane Irma impacted the island chain Sept. 10.

Local officials cited the  speedy completion of significant infrastructure repairs, restoration of utilities, and necessity of resuming the tourism-driven economy that employs about 50 percent of the Keys workforce for their decision.

While Key Largo and Key West were least affected by the storm, not all lodging properties, including RV resorts, and other tourism facilities throughout the Keys are operating on a normal basis. Potential visitors should call ahead to ensure that hotels and their favorite attractions are open.

Recovery efforts are ongoing, especially in the Lower Keys and parts of Marathon where many residences and businesses were hardest hit by the storm.

Key West and Marathon airports are open, the Port of Key West is hosting cruise ships and the Florida Keys Overseas Highway is readily drivable for motorists throughout the 125-mile island chain.

I was in Montana on a fishing vacation when Hurricane Irma hit...  Was able to fly back home on Sept. 25th..  My home, skiff and vehicles all survived..  Thanks to the help of same great friends who secured them for me while I was gone..  By the time I was able to get back, water, power and interenet had all been restored..  The utility companys did an amazing job geting the infastructure back so fast,,,

The lower keys were hit the hardest... how ever resteraunts, bars, grocery stores, etc.. are all up and running...

Key West missed the main brunt of the storm...  If you walk around down town, you would probably not even realize there was a major weather event...

OK here is the important stuff you want to know....  The fishing is good!

Went out yesterday with a good buddy and we had a great day fly fishing for bonefish....  Bo hooked and landed two...  I manage to hook three and lose two...  we had a few shots at permit too....
